Sketch brings tips that led to capture of 'Crown Royal' bandit

In the Athens robbery, witnesses saw the man without a mask before and after the robbery - as well as a pickup belonging to Verner - and helped a Georgia Bureau of Investigation forensic artist make a sketch.

A reader saw that sketch in the Feb. 26, 2008, edition of the Athens Banner-Herald and called police to say the drawing resembled Hughes, officials said.

Police sketch released in Lincoln Park robberies

Police sketches don't have to be exact. Police sketches work to get people talking, and whenever you get people talking, that generates leads.

Even though you (and the writer of the Examiner article below) may think that this is a pretty non-descript drawing, even that it shows that the guy doesn't have features that stick out is a clue in itself. So it shows what they're NOT looking for. The sketch shows what the guy's hairline is like, how his hair is cut, and you can see that his features are pretty normal. You can see that he doesn't have any facial moles or scars that were big enough for the victim to notice. It shows the type of diamond studs that are worn, and the size of them.

You can see that according to the witness/victim, the perp didn't have an angry expression as he robbed. His eyes actually look quite gentle. Not the "boogyman" that people envision when they think of someone who beats and robs somebody. From this sketch, it would appear to me that he's not angry, he's just doing a job, either for himself or for someone else. He's probably used to doing this. Fairly emotionless.
